Mia Risberg is a visual artist based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Born in Sweden, she spent her childhood living in various countries before immigrating to the U.S as a young adult. She attended Pratt Institute and Hunter College in NYC, graduating from the latter with a BA in Fine Arts.
In my work I depict places and people who appear to hold secrets.
Informed by memories, photographs, and imagination, my paintings and drawings portray enigmatic individuals and contemplative landscapes. Figures are often cropped or shown in the form of a shadow, and places are sparsely, if at all, populated.
I am interested in investigating symbolic imagery, magical realism, and ambiguous narratives. Through moments of apparent stillness I invite the viewer to enter a quiet, sometimes dreamy place, one that invites pause, and offers a respite from our chaotic external world.
